BarnAllen has an immediate need for a full-time Librarian (Audiovisual & Preservation) for a project located in Bethesda, MD with the National Library of Medicine. The qualified candidate will provide a range of library services needed to properly maintain its collections and reformat collection materials to preserve and make them accessible to the public.

Position Duties

  • Assist staff librarians, library technicians, and library clerks on the Audiovisual Preservation team at the National Library of Medicine (NLM)
  • Develop, maintain, edit and analyze a quality assurance and quality control program with methods to ensure all staff accurately meet the goals and requirements of the contract in a medical library setting.
  • Operate production-level scanners to digitize library collection materials.
  • Develop and edit written instructions and documentation and provide instruction and training to library collection maintenance staff to perform scanning and image processing.
  • Assign and review work, delegating tasks as appropriate
  • Perform quality assurance of scanning operations and post-processing activities.
  • Complete monthly reports statistics, scheduling and coordinating meetings.
  • Conduct re-work for files not meeting project requirements.
  • Retrieve, track and return batches of materials to be digitized.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience scanning library materials, processing images, and performing QA/QC on images and metadata.
  • Have ability to plan assign, evaluate work or paraprofessional staff.
  • Ability to distinguish between analog and digital media formats
  • Experience with inventorying, description, handling and inspection of film, video and audio formats.
  • Familiarity with media history and media technologies from the late 19th century to the present day.
  • Understanding of core digital preservation best practices for audiovisuals that have been digitally reformatted
  • Understanding of audiovisual metadata standards such as PBCore
  • US Citizenship

Education and Specialized Experience

  • Master's degree in library science, Information Science or related field.
  • Meet qualification requirements established by the American Library Association (ALA) and/or Medical Library Association (MLA)
  • Experience using command line and open-source tools for the inspection of digital file assets (MediaArea’s QCTools or MediaConch, for example)
  • Experience using Digital Asset Management system such as AirTable
  • Some working knowledge of National Library of Medicine (NLM) preferred
